縁先で房ようじ洗い

洗面所が完備されたのは近年のことです。以前は縁先で歯を磨いて顔を洗っていました。そのための特別な場所がなかったのです。
縁先に石の手洗い鉢がありました。ない場合は水を桶に入れて用意しました。片方の浮世絵は手洗い鉢の前で使い終わった房ようじを洗っています。もう一方は房ようじで歯を磨いていて、洗面器の横にうがい椀もおいてあります。この場所は便所の近くにありました。身を整える場所が集められていました。このように歯を磨く習慣と共に細かな生活の場面も見ることができます。

The facility of toiletary area have completed recently in Japan. In the past we washed and brushed teeth at veranda. We had not special area for washing, rinsing, tooth brushing. At a corner of small garden
there was stone bowl for water. If not water in wooden container was prepared. In one of this wood cut printing, front lady are washing the tuft toothbrush after use. In another printing she uses tuft toothbrush
and a cup for rinse is prepared by washing container. This place were located near toilet. The cleaning area was gathered in one place.
